Ted Kennedy, Barack Obama, Caroline Kennedy Appear at a Rally in February
In a surprise to casual political observers, Senator Ted Kennedy showed up to give a short, but passionate speech to those gathered at the DNC. It was Kennedy who endorsed Obama early in his campaign, which lent the junior Senator from Illinois badly needed backing and creditability. The endorsement was likewise a blow to the Hillary Clinton campaign. Tonight Kennedy’s speech, along with that of Caroline Kennedy who introduced “Uncle Teddy”, reiterated that the Kennedy “brand” was solidly in Barack Obama’s corner. Caroline, who led Obama’s Vice Presidential search committee, went so far to say that Obama inspires her as much as John F. Kennedy inspired Americans in the early sixties. While a lot of people will mark this wrongly as a passing-of-the-torch moment (his original speech backing Obama was a risk for Kennedy and is the “real” moment to mark), it was another signal to Clinton supporters and the PUMA (party unity my ass) crowd that it is time to come back home.
Cheers,
Tom
